Travel Theme: Street Market ~ Pasar Simpang Dago Bandung

I tell you. There is no term as “street market” in Indonesia. Why is that? Because, taking half of the street or the sidewalk and change it to shopping center is everyday phenomenon here. Not only that, you can find such thing almost everywhere. By everywhere I mean almost on every road segment on the country. At least you can find one of the so called “Pedagang Kaki Lima” five feet merchant on a segment of a road. Well, not in a tool road and highway of course.

Pedagang Kaki Lima called like that because when Dutch still around, they instructed us to build five feet wide sidewalk for each street. Gradually over time, some merchant made their own shop on top the five feet sidewalk hence “five feet merchant”.

Because we can see it everyday, Indonesian doesn’t think a street market as something special. So, when we make vacation on some tourist site, we never think to take picture of street market there. I am no exception. Now, when Ailsa invited me to join her photo challenge this week, I regret that. Why I never think that street market can an interesting object.

Here, I share some pictures of Pedagang Kaki Lima street market near my lodgement. Dago street, Bandung. The market is well known as “Pasar Simpang Dago” dago joint market. 

Morning street market on Simpang Dago

The picture above is the morning part of the market. It provides traditional Indonesian food for breakfast. At night, this street will filled with other market that sell food for dinner. At the picture below, you can see one of the Pedagang Kaki Lima. He sells “Lumpia Basah”. It literally means “wet spring roll” which means spring roll without frying. It is one of Indonesia’s food. Lumpia basah made from bean sprouts and eggs and lumpia’s skin. It tastes good you know.

Beside food, in the street market we can other merchant such as:

Key Master

Tailor

Household

and of course (in the other side of the street) there is a traditional market that sell vegetables and fruits.

At night, the face of the market change to sell standar food for dinner.

Sorry I don’t have any decent travel/ tourist site picture of street market. These picture is just street market near my home. Just want you to know more about Indonesia. Cheers… 😀
